Why We’re Obsessed with Autumn Sage

When it comes to plants that thrive in North Texas, true sages (aka salvias) are in a league of their own! These sun-loving, heat-tolerant, pollinator-powered perennials bloom their hearts out from spring through frost (not just autumn!)—and they ask for very little in return. Whether you’re gardening in heavy clay or sandy soil, dealing with deer pressure, or just tired of plants that fizzle by July, Salvia greggii’s are your go-to. They’re water-wise, colorful, and some of the best nectar plants you can put in your landscape.

And guess what? They’re on sale—Buy One, Get One Free—right now at Rooted In! Whether you want fiery reds or soft pastels, compact forms for containers or garden bed fillers, we’ve got an incredible lineup this season.

Here’s a quick tour through some of the stunning cultivars we currently have in stock:

Mirage Series (Salvia greggii)

12–18 in. tall and wide
Compact and densely branched, the Mirage series is a workhorse in containers and low borders. Blooms prolifically from spring through frost, with exceptional color saturation and uniformity.

  • Mirage Salmon – Warm, sunset-toned salmon blooms that soften the garden with Mediterranean charm.

  • Mirage Rose Bicolor – Eye-catching bicolor petals in rose-pink and white, resembling watercolor brushstrokes.

  • Mirage Blue – A rare cool violet-blue among greggii types, offering strong contrast in warm-toned beds.

  • Mirage Pink – A classic mid-pink with steady blooming and a tidy habit.

So Cool Series (Salvia microphylla hybrids)

18–24 in. tall and wide
These hybrids bring intense color and slightly more upright growth. Well-suited for hot climates and admired for their durability and vivid tones.

  • So Cool Pale – A soft, ethereal lavender that brings calm to mixed plantings.

  • So Cool Pink – Bold, saturated pink flowers with strong visual punch.

  • Cool Violet – A deep violet-purple that anchors silver and white garden palettes.

  • Cool Pink – Soft pink with a delicate touch; pairs well with grasses or other perennials.

Other Standout Selections

  • Hot Lips (Salvia × jamensis)

A modern classic with red and white bicolor blooms that shift depending on temperature. Beloved by hummingbirds and long admired for its garden personality.

  • Ignition Orange (Salvia × jamensis)
    18–24 in. tall and wide
